πmeeting
October planning meeting
A self-meeting to scope the next two weeks of Margin.
The crux: I keep writing essays about margin notes instead of building the surface. The next two weeks are about shutting up and shipping the ugliest possible prototype.
Decisions
- The first prototype will only support PDF as a source, not HTML. Less surface area; the kind of long reading I care about happens there anyway. Revisit once the gesture set is settled.
- The mark primitive will be a single-finger swipe. The note primitive will be a double-tap that opens an inline editor anchored to the cursor position.
- Sync is out of scope for the first prototype. (Not the same as forever; see Locust for the sync ideas.)
Tasks
- Write up the A reader's stance essay
- Decide on PDF-only for prototype
- Sketch the gesture set on paper
- Build the dumbest possible mark/note primitive in 200 lines
- Use it to read one full paper end-to-end
- Write a short retrospective in Margin
Open
A nagging worry, recorded so I can come back to it: am I solving a problem I have, or a problem I imagine other people have? See the related thought in Are you the user?.
